Panvel is a city and municipal corporation in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India, located on the outskirts of Mumbai and serving as a major junction for road and rail networks.
Geography
Panvel lies at the confluence of the Khadakwasla and Kalwa rivers, approximately 40 km southeast of Mumbai's central business district, and is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The city is situated on the foothills of the Sahyadri range and experiences a tropical climate with heavy monsoon rains.
History
The area around Panvel has been inhabited since ancient times, with archaeological evidence indicating settlement during the Satavahana and later the Maratha periods. Under British rule, Panvel developed as a strategic railway hub, connecting the Konkan coast with the interior of the Indian subcontinent.
Economy and Infrastructure
Panvel functions as a commercial and logistical center, hosting the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) container terminal and several industrial estates. The city is also a gateway to the Matheran hill station and the Khandala region, contributing to its tourism sector. Major transportation links include the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, the National Highway 4, and the Panvel–Karjat railway line.
Education
The city contains several educational institutions, such as DAV New Panvel and Rao Junior College of Science, which serve the local population and surrounding suburbs. Higher‑education opportunities are also accessible in nearby Kharghar and Navi Mumbai.
